oUR STORY

We're outdoor enthusiasts always looking for the next adventure. In 2018, we decided to purchase and renovate this hidden gem of a cabin in the heart of West Virginia's George Washington National Forest.

We kept its original name -- Santi's Lost Stream -- as a nod to Santi, the man who built this classic little A-frame. While the gentle stream that runs through the foot of the property is "lost" through some of the year, it can be found during rainy season and when the natural spring source decides to flow.

When we are not enjoying Santi's Lost Stream and all the Lost River area has to offer, we open up our lovely cabin to guests. We look forward to hosting you at Santi's Lost Stream!

Sometimes Snap Decisions are the Best Decisions

I wouldn't necessarily call it a snap decision, but our choice to purchase and then fully rehab this classic A-frame cabin definitely came more from the heart than it did from the head. We've always been outdoorsy people, unafraid to get make our way into the woods. We'd consider ourselves somewhat handy, as well, having undertaken various home DIY projects in the past. That said, never had we endeavored to bring those two "interests" into a single adventure until we happened upon Santi's Lost Stream, the little A-frame cottage that stole hearts (and some of our sanity).

I still marvel, at times, that we could see the potential that lay underneath the coating of dust, mildew from years of no use, not to mention the layers of faux wood paneling, drop ceiling panels, and carpet remnants that covered nearly every surface of this +/- 1000 square foot space. Armed with a vision -- and a lack of any true sense of what we were getting ourselves into with this project -- we embarked on a journey to bring Santi's Lost Stream back to life and what it looks like today.

Recycle. Reuse. Reap the Benefits of Decorating on a Budget!

There are few things in life I enjoy more than shopping and decorating. (OK, maybe hiking, traveling, hanging out with good friends, and a nice glass of Chardonnay fall into that category, too, but I digress.)

When we took on the challenge of breathing new life into Santi's Lost Stream, I was so excited to roll up my sleeves and decorate it! Visions of stylish furniture, eclectic artwork, and funky design pieces filled my head. All the years of ripping out pages from magazines -- and the obligatory pinning of pics on Pinterest -- as style inspiration would finally pay off! I was going to design and decorate my first real space. But then my husband gave me a budget. A very small budget. My dreams of hunting the perfect pieces at my favorite home stores, trendy resale shops, and high-end antique galleries were dead. I was going to have to get creative (and thrifty), and use some serious elbow grease if I was going to succeed in my mission of creating a comfy, cozy, and stylish space.

While it took a little imagination at first, it was not long before I realized the treasure trove of items that we already had, thanks to Santi -- the cabin's original owner -- and his apparent fondness for collecting things, including furniture. (I can relate. I've been know to rescue a discarded piece of furniture from the curb on one, or two...or, well, who's actually counting number of occasions). I also scoured endless nooks and crannies of crammed, cobweb-filled rooms at off-the-beaten path antique malls in places like rural Ohio, Virginia, West Virginia, and North Carolina. I binged watch Flea Market Flip for ideas and inspiration. And then I got started.

An antique shelving unit turned into a curio cabinet for the hall. A vintage sewing drawer transformed into a spare bath tissue holder. A worse-for-the-wear foot locker became a coffee table (with storage for games). A round of lumber morphed into a night stand. An old dresser found new life as the bathroom vanity. Weathered and stained outcasts refreshed as side tables. And the list goes on.

It was exciting. It was fun. It was hard work. But, most of all, it was worth it! Recycle. Reuse. Reap the benefits of decorating on a budget!
